Presenter: Dr. Paolo Romano

Recently, distribution synchrophasor technology has started to gain momentum as the penetration of variable and intermittent resources is reaching record highs. A number of utilities across the globe, such as ComEd and SDG&E in the US or Netze BW and Unareti in Europe, have started deploying and integrating time-synchronized phasor measurements to monitor the grid state, rapidly locate or even prevent fault events and efficiently coordinate Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in real-time.

Despite the rising interest, much confusion still prevails with respect to the technical requirements of distribution PMUs and the integration of synchrophasor-based solutions at the distribution level.

The aim of this webinar is to bring more clarity and demystify specific subjects related to the deployment of synchrophasor technology by tapping into the experience gathered by Zaphiro from the field deployment of its D-PMU solution in various countries. In this webinar we will present the integration of distribution synchrophasors in the utility IT/OT environment with respect to the adopted communication and time synchronization technologies, optimal sensor selection and placement, overall system design and deployment and relevant use-cases.

Born in La Spezia, Italy, in 1987, Paolo received the M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 2011. He then moved to Switzerland to pursue his PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL), which he received in 2016 with a thesis on advanced measurement techniques for distribution grid monitoring and automation.

Since 2017 Paolo is the CEO and Co-founder of Zaphiro Technologies, an innovative company in the smart grid domain, promoting the use of synchrophasors in distribution grids.
